A Level Playing Field for those of us who suffer from a mental illness.

We Work Towards Equity

When you shift from the label to the person, it makes it easier to be equal. To feel equal.

Equality means we are all equal and resources get spread equally. We all know that doesn’t happen, but that’s not even the desired state we want to mature our society to.

Equity is what we work towards. Equity is about providing a level playing field, “a situation in which everyone has a fair and equal chance of succeeding.”

Relying on the Biopsychosocial Model of care, I Am Me! Not My Illness! is our effort to join with others, lend our perspective seeing everything about a person as interlinked, to end the stigma associated with mental illness in society.

For a psychiatrist to be helpful, we must never stop asking questions. But for a person with mental health matters, the more one suffers,  the more quiet one becomes. One feels one is not relevant enough to talk about. Sitting alone in the house becomes the only reality as one continues to suffer in silence.

We can only end the stigma by acknowledging that there is an issue and pointing out and discussing instances in society where the stigma is denied, ignored, or perpetuated. Stay tuned and help us spread the word to end the stigma!
